Tips on How to Use
- Choose which spinnerbait configuration and what coloured spinnerbait skirt you wish to use.
SINGLE BLADES: Ideal when fishing deeper water or fast flowing water as they sink quicker than double blades. Most water resistant setups which allows for a slower presentation and for deeper retrieves. Single Willow is the ideal choice when fish deep or faster flowing water.
DOUBLE COLRADO: Offers most vibration. Offers the least water resistance which allows to be fished in shallow water. Ideal when fishing shallow water or when fish are not active and need to be stirred up to entice a strike.
TANDEM: Offers the maximum Flash. Good all round combination. Best of both worlds. Great choice when fishing clear water.
- Generally dark coloured skirts work better in dirty water or deeper water as they create silhouettes. In clear water bright coloured or natural coloured skirts work better. This does not always work, but it is a good starting point.
- Use a uni knot or locked half blood knot and tie the line directly to the link in wire arm of the spinnerbait or buzz bait. (See diagram 1). Alternatively, if you prefer to use a snap swivel or speed clip so quick lure changes can be made, place a small split ring or small piece of rubber tubing over link in wire arm of spinnerbait or buzz bait. (See diagram 2).
- The team at Murray River Spinnerbaits recommends attaching a soft plastic to the spinnerbait hook under the silicon skirt (See diagram 3). The soft plastic adds bulk to the spinnerbait which makes it an even more attractive option for targeted fish species. The soft plastic also gives the spinnerbait a more realistic look and soft feel which results in fish having another crack at the spinnerbait if they missed it the first time. Scented soft plastics are great as they give your spinnerbait an extra edge.
- Stinger hooks can also be attached to the soft plastic which increases hook up rates. (See diagram 4).
- Cast spinnerbait into water and test them to ensure that blades are spinning freely. Murray River Spinnerbaits use the best ball bearing swivels available which allows for ultra slow retrieves. The fun begins now as you are ready to start fishing!
- Cast spinnerbait and use one of or a combination of the following retrieving techniques.
CONTACT or SLOW ROLLING: Locate an area with fallen trees, tree stumps or weed beds. Cast spinnerbait past your target, let it sink to the bottom and then retrieve spinnerbait slowly with rod tip low. Allow the spinnerbait to run along the bottom knocking and hitting stumps, logs, grass or weed that you are fishing. This changes the direction and action of spinnerbait slightly which often triggers a strike.
HELICOPTER: When fishing steep banks, ledges and drop offs, cast spinnerbait and allow it to free fall (sink) to the bottom on a tight line. The blades will rotate as the spinnerbait drops. When spinnerbait hits bottom, reel up slack and raise rod tip slightly and then drop spinnerbait again.
WAKE or BULGING: In dirty, murky or shallow water cast spinnerbait past heavy cover and immediately raise rod tip high and start winding reel quickly. The spinnerbait will rise to the surface. Once it has slow the retrieve down so the blades of the spinnerbait don't brake the water. The spinnerbait creates a wake which the fish love.
BUZZ: In dirty, murky or shallow water cast spinnerbait past heavy cover. Immediately raise rod tip high and start winding reel so the blades of the spinnerbait brake the water surface creating a splashing sound. Technique used when you don't have any Buzz Baits.
- Vary the speed of retrieves, twitch rod tip, use different retrieving techniques, change spinnerbait configurations and skirt colours until you find what the fish are attracted to on the day which often varies from day to day.
- After using the spinnerbait shake it to remove water from it. Then hang spinnerbait up to allow it to try before placing it back in tackle box or tackle bag. If using spinnerbaits in salt water or extremely dirty water wash spinnerbaits in fresh water and then allow them to dry. This will ensure that rust does not appear and will increase the life of the spinnerbait and ensure that blades will continue to spin correctly.
- The team at Murray River Spinnerbaits promotes, recommends and practices catch and release.
